Some people just don't respond to normal, neutral civilized means of communication that are meant to diffuse situations. I'm an incredibly blunt xxx wants fucking person, I'm an incredibly open person, if something or someone is upsetting me or bothering me or making me anxious, the source of the issue almost immediately knows it. My So is receptive and understanding of this, and in that manner I am lucky because he and I communicate well (it's not just me communicating, he communicates as well and we both try to listen, although lets be honest, that doesn't always happen in a relationship). My point is that perhaps you two have different communication styles. If you SO were doing something that was freaking the dog out I might say something like "Dude, you're scaring the dog, if he pees because he's, you're cleaning it up." I try to make it a little light, but while still pointing out the behavior that is pissing me off. Do you think your SO is truly narcissistic or just self centered and self involved? If he is narcissistic, there's no fixing this. If you're having so issues then maybe counseling is in order? Can you live with his bad traits in exchange for having the good ones as well? Maybe you need to be more blunt. I don't mean so blunt that you're mean, but maybe a little more up front, although it sounds like you're already upfront. It sounds like you SO might have an emotional disorder, maybe a non-extreme version of a personality disorder, but I would definitely suggest individual counseling for him (good luck getting him to go) and couples counseling for the both of you.
